Louis Wain Assortment of Humorous Cat Artwork at Parker High-quality Artwork Auctions on October 3, 2024

A Non-public Assortment of 13 watercolours and sketches by Louis Wain (1860-1939) who was well-known for his depictions of humorous cats are coming to the marketplace for the primary time in 50 years when they are going to be supplied by Parker High-quality Artwork Auctions in a sale of High-quality Work and Frames on Thursday, October 3, 2024, beginning at 11am in Farnham, Surrey. Henny Smith, Director of Parker High-quality Artwork explains: “Louis Wain is synonymous with creating human- like depictions of cats and this assortment exhibits cats in hats; with fantastic facial expressions; on the seashore and even stealing chickens!”

She continued: “This assortment was amassed by a girl who labored in vintage retailers within the Forties and 50s. She began to gather Wain as a consequence of her love of cats – she owned breeds comparable to a Blue Burmese and Abyssinians – and the humour she discovered within the works by Wain.”

The estimates vary from £200 to £15,000 and among the many highlights “Christmas Buying”, an en grisaille that depicts cats purchasing at a butcher, which was purchased from the London vendor Michael Parkin on Christmas Eve in 1986, is anticipated to fetch between £10,000 to £15,000 [lot 182]. A pen, ink and watercolour titled “I guarantee you I’m fairly sober” carries an estimate of £5,000-8,000 [lot 168]. Elsewhere, a lithograph titled “The Conductor” is estimated at £200-£300 [lot 177] and a Fortunate Haw Haw Cat vase made for Max Emanuel and Co. carries an estimate of £300-£500 [lot 174].
